Entries for some of the world’s most prestigious awards for wine has opened and closes in March. The Decanter World Wine Awards ran by Decanter magazine and the International Wine Challenge Awards. The award ceremonies are held in London in June every year.
The Decanter World Wine Award attracts over 18,000 entries from more than 50 countries. It has grown in popularity since the inaugural event in 2004 because of having the leading wine experts judging and having award categories reflecting the changing trends in the wine industry such as Organic, Biodynamic and Natural wines. Last year, Australia saw 10 wines awarded Best in Show medals beating out Europe’s power trio of France, Italy and Spain.
The International Wine Challenge Awards is one of the longest running international competitions, established in 1984. The judging process involves blind tasting by a panel of 400 expert judges in various categories, including Red, White, Rose, Sparkling, Fortified and Sweet Wines. This competition is known for this rigorous judging process where wineries are provided with valuable feedback on how to improve their wines to suit the preferences of consumers. Australia came second to France, in 2023, taking out an impressive 62 Gold, 250 Silver and 199 Bronze Medals.
These awards explain the increase in global demand for Australian wines. Australia now produces 4% of the world’s wine and the fifth largest wine exporter. Our top export countries are UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Germany.
