The start of a new year heralds in new year resolutions, or a list of things you will do or not do – new year is a new you, or so they say. However, failing at a new year’s goal in the first couple months of the year is as common as setting them.
According to a 2023 Forbes survey, this energy and excitement wears off with the average resolution lasting 3.74 months. The new trend is to have new year absolutions, releasing yourself from accomplishing a goal (and the pressure of not progressing towards it) such as learning a new language, playing a new instrument, start saying ‘no’ etc. Subtracting these commitments will give you room for new goals.
The new year resolutions that will make you feel bad about the new year and bad about yourself will most likely to fail. Some mental health professionals describe this as the “false-hope syndrome”—in other words, the tendency to set unrealistic goals and expect a good outcome.
So how do you set better new year resolution? Try "temptation bundling" which is to pick something you will enjoy or find a way to make it more fun. If the goal is to improve fitness, look for a local sports club to join or start experimenting with healthier ingredients in your cooking.
The Forbes 2023 survey highlighted improving fitness, finances, mental health and diet/lose weight as the top goals for 2024.
