8th September is International Literacy Day, declared by UNESCO in 1967.
It’s the opportunity to remind the public of the importance of being able to read and write.
This year’s theme is ‘Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies’, specifically, after COVID when classes were suspended.
Here are the top 5 things you can do to celebrate International Literacy Day: 1. Read aloud sessions: Participate or Organise these sessions at the local school, library or community centers. 2. Book drives: Host a book drive to collect books for those in need. 3. Storytelling workshops: Sharing stories and encouraging others to tell their own tales. 4. Literacy Awareness Campaigns: Spread awareness through social media campaigns, blog posts and discussions. 5. Support Literacy Organisations: Volunteer or donate to organisations that work towards improving literacy rates, such as the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.
Personally, I’m going to support my local independent bookstore by picking up a book by an author whom I have not read before.
