As the FIFA World Cup continues in Qatar, here are five facts that you probably don’t know about the emirate.
- The entire country is smaller in size than Greater Sydney. It is home to 3 million people approximately 11,586km2 compared to Sydney 12,368km2.
- Qatar’s 42-year-old ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has 3 wives and 13 children. He is British educated and is the owner of Paris Saint-Germain football club.
- Doha, Qatar’s capital, is one of the safest cities in the world. It has one of the lowest overall levels of crime according to database Numbeo’s 2022 crime index by city.
- Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world with a GDP per capita of $93,521 according to the World Bank. This is due to its natural resources–oil and gas.
- During the World Cup, all the roads will lead to stadiums and no private vehicles will be allowed on the road. Schools will also be closed and work from home will be adopted.
