The rise in popularity of cryptocurrencies and use of electronic payment methods in recent times has triggered the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to review the future of money. You may already have observed before and especially now after the pandemic, the use of cash has been declining. The RBA is planning to increase payments to financial institutions to remove unfit banknotes from circulation – through investments into quality sorting machines and transportation of the cash. This is effectively “buying back” cash and removing it from circulation. A central bank digital currency (CBDC) that will be the equivalent to the dollar, will also be trialled this year. A select group of participants will show how the currency could be used and its potential benefits to Australia. Australians could see lower costs for payments and more control of their private data which is currently held by private banks and financial technology firms. Importantly, a CBDC would be less speculative than the private currencies with more legal and financial protections. No doubt, there will be more news to come out of this pilot.
